Visit to the dentist

I have met my nemesis... The dentist, for a recent consultation and some work.
I undertook this with courage and resolve, NOT!
As they say here in the UK, I was bricking it.
Sweaty palms, tachycardia and dread were the order of the day.
The calming aquarium was far from calming as I observed either a very clever fish swimming upside down or...  It was dead.
Brilliant, what a bad omen.
However I persevered and armed with a free copy of Mental Dental (Murder by Proxy) I finally managed to go through with the torturous drilling,  pulling, suction and blood loss.

This was on Saturday. Today,  I went for a quick review, noticing a fellow patient reading the complementary copy I left there.
Somehow, they were enjoying it...
I did mention I was the author and I was embarrassingly complimented on what they had read. Obviously a long wait.

I got to thinking, is this a good way of promoting my novel?

My conclusion, valiant effort but not one I am keen on repeating too frequently.

This was my second novel and it is thrilling story. It is a book that intertwines humanity, science fiction, science fact, fear, myth and complexity.
It is a tale with two sub plots that run concurrently through it: 
One story is about a Cockroach phobic man who fathoms out a solution to his phobia. The solution being to rid the world of cockroaches. 

The other story within it is about a woman whose chance discovery interacts with the first plot, resulting in explosive repercussions. 

Are cockroaches really our safeguard from an even worse evil? 
Was it Mother Nature’s plan to have these pests scuttling around us or was it a mistake? 
Within the covers of this book, you will discover that the extinction of roaches causes the resurgence of an evil that was quashed once, a long time ago. 

Now pets have started to disappear without a trace, crops being devoured and people are being hurt. 
Is there a way to halt this destruction? Is this the start of mankind’s extinction? 
Can nature’s equilibrium ever be restored?

This was a statement made today in a meeting I attended regarding health services.
What the individual meant was not what I heard.
I heard connotations of Mental Dental (Murder by Proxy)

My third book, was about crime undertaken by Dentists.  The most severe of the ten commandments being broken... Though shall not kill!

It's an original story of multiple murders that go relatively undetected.

What do they mean?

Let's examine them one by one...

Legally Lucky :
The man on the floor is me.
Its a story of plenty and hope,  money and friendship coupled with crime and justice. 
Originally I wanted a judge and lottery balls in the cover.  I listened!
The definitive cover depicts some of the plot of the story with money strewn around and the handcuffed author on the floor.  Created by one of my sons,  a graphic designer and whizz on photoshop.

Phobic Wars :
This one is about cockroaches and a fictional creation that is based on Greek myth of Medusa. It is continuing the Greek myth, particularly Atlantis within the body of the novel.
The destruction to humanity is depicted by the cityscape in the background...  I made this one and was pleased at the result.

Menta Dental (MBP) :
The cover was another one I designed and I wanted to make it funky.
The faces of the dentists are purposely repeated.  It allows for the theme of the book.  One dentist accused of murder and another in the back who is really to blame...  Clever I thought!!

Phantasms in the Infirmary :
This one is down to my son's magic with design and ideas.
This is a hospital horror story collection and the silhouette of the nurse on a black background with the white open door being instrumental.
It again depicts the open doorway between the world of the living and the dead. It's dark and menacing I hope.

Writing a book and associating a cover that works are a pleasure.

Again,  the stories on the covers are deep and well thought out in composition and meaning.

Financial rewards

Writing a book was something I've always dared to do..
My reason,  a legacy, a chance to be different,  an opportunity to create a piece of work that was far removed from my day job as a clinician.  It was a dare and a passion.  The last thing on my mind was the financial gain.

Four books in,  I'm still driven by the same things. 
The drive is still to share a creation,  a moment in my mind that is allowed out in public. Beautiful, scary, clever and complex yet different.

All four books are different :
Legally Lucky is a sweet story with a moral lesson in life.

Phobic Wars,  a complex story of cockroaches and Atlantis intertwined with green issues and love.

Mental Dental (MBP)  is a release of energy,  a twisting and twisted killer thriller that involves innovative streams,  you've got to read it to believe it.

Then there's the new baby,  Phantasms in the Infirmary.
This again is different in many ways.  It's a compilation of chilling tales some on experiences in hospital for many years.  It's also different in that it is coauthored by my wife,  Julie. 
It's a great compilation and the different style of writing is brilliantly blended.

Now I know they are human too, they make mistakes. Except for that scary dentist in Little Shop of Horrors of course!  Don't "open wide", whatever you do!,  Dr. Jessie Stacks, a competent and caring dentist, is devastated when a healthy patient dies in her surgery. Despite being exonerated she still has to endure the police enquiry and press frenzy which ensue following this sudden and unexpected death. She also experiences a crisis of confidence in her own dental skills and proficiency as a result of the traumatic episode. She sets out to discover if there have been any other similar unexpected deaths within the setting of a dental surgery and whether there are any common factors linking any such deaths, enlisting the invaluable help of her father, an eminent dental surgeon "with connections in high places". He manages to access sensitive and privileged information for her and as Jessie delves deeper into the circumstances of other similar deaths she begins to see a disturbing pattern emerge. But what possible motive could there be for these random deaths? Is it possible that such incredible depravity actually exists? Eventually Jessie finds the unwelcome answers to these questions. I thought the plot ingenious and entertaining (although hopefully implausible!) and I'm sure it has done nothing to help foster good patient-dentist relationships! I enjoyed the first half of the book as it detailed the case histories of the poor unsuspecting victims but then, unfortunately, I found the latter half of the book rather boring, repetitive and even childish in places. Unlike the other reviewers I found the characters superficial and bland. Also I was rather surprised by the number of grammatical/spelling/punctuation errors (e.g. "pour" instead of "pore", "Handles" instead of "Handel's") and found them somewhat distracting. However, it was a free download and quite enjoyable overall. Available as a Kindle book or on Paperback.
